Study Permit Application Refusals
Facing a refusal for your Canadian study permit application can be disheartening, but there are steps you can take to address the situation. If your study permit application has been rejected, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) usually provides a letter detailing the reasons behind the refusal.
Common Reasons for Refusal
Refusals are typically the result of an applicant failing to satisfy one or more of the eligibility criteria. Common reasons include an inability to show proof of financial capacity to support yourself while studying in Canada, and challenges convincing immigration officers about the genuine intent to study and leave Canada after completing the program. As of September 1, 2025, IRCC’s minimum cost-of-living requirement for a single study permit applicant (outside Quebec) increased to CAD $22,895 for the first year, up from the previous threshold of $20,635. This amount is separate from tuition and travel costs, and applicants who rely on the older figure are a common source of avoidable refusals.
What to Do After a Refusal
Upon receiving a refusal, applicants can carefully assess the stated reasons and decide on the next course of action. You may choose to reapply, address the identified concerns, or seek professional assistance, such as consulting a professional for an official review of the decision.
If the refusal seems unjust, applicants can opt for a review by the Federal Court of Canada. Typically, legal representation is necessary for this process. By proving that you meet the eligibility criteria, you may have grounds for a successful review.
