Travelling While Your Extension Is Pending

If you hold a Canadian study permit and want to travel outside of Canada too, then you can re-enter Canada after travel if your study permit is still valid or the permit was extended during your travel. Additionally, if the permit extension is still under processing on your return, then you may re-enter Canada using a Visitor Visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). Though, you would not be allowed to pursue your study till you receive your permit extension.

Proof of reason and means to return to your home, such as family or a job, may be requested. A visitor visa can be applied through Express Entry or the Provincial Nominee Program as per your eligibility. ETA is required for visa-exempt foreign nationals who want to enter and re-enter Canada. It is linked to the passport and holds a validity of five years. If your study permit has already expired rather than simply being under extension, note that IRCC updated its restoration guidance on May 1, 2026: out-of-status students can now apply to restore their status as a visitor instead of being limited to restoring as a student, provided the application is filed within 90 days of losing status. This can be a faster route back to legal status if you do not plan to resume studying immediately.
