Ukrainians in Canada Eligible to Apply for Permanent Residence from October

In a landmark development, the Canadian government announced, Ukrainians living in Canada will have the opportunity to apply for permanent residence, starting in October. This significant immigration policy change is expected to have far-reaching implications for both Ukrainian nationals residing in Canada and Canadian society as a whole. Shortly put, Canada’s new immigration policy is opened up permanent residency opportunities to Ukrainian nationals living there.

Who Will be Eligible?

The policy aims to streamline the immigration process and provide a more accessible pathway for Ukrainians to integrate fully into Canadian society. The Ukrainians who hold temporary residence status in Canada and at least one Canadian family member will be able to use the new pathway beginning on October 23, 2023. Ukrainian spouses, common-law partners, parents, grandparents, siblings, and children or grandchildren of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident are among the individuals who will be eligible, according to IRCC.

Under the interim special measures provided by the Canadian government, Ukrainians who possess a Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET) visa will have until March 31, 2024, to travel to Canada. On July 15, Canada stopped accepting new CUAET applications; however, Ukrainians and members of their families can still apply for a temporary resident visa (TRV) to enter Canada.  Ukrainians and their families will be able to stay in Canada for up to three years after arriving on a TRV through study permits and open work permits, which IRCC will give priority. They will also have access to settlement programs including language instruction and employment assistance. The CUAET has made it possible for more than 166,000 Ukrainians to travel since its inception in March 2022.

Application Process for Permanent Residence

The application process for permanent residence involves several stages.
