Effective February 15, the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) has temporarily halted the processing of applications for the Alberta Opportunity Stream until further notice. This decision aims to allow the province to manage its current application inventory effectively and allocate immigration nominations to address pressing priorities, including filling labor shortages in key sectors such as healthcare, technology, construction, agriculture, tourism, hospitality, and other high-demand industries.
Addressing Program Priorities
The pause in processing will enable Alberta to assess its current inventory and allocate resources strategically to meet the needs of priority sectors. Applications submitted before February 15 will continue to be evaluated, while measures will be implemented to manage future application volumes in alignment with program priorities, ensuring reasonable service standards across all streams of the AAIP.
Overview of Alberta Opportunity Stream
The Alberta Opportunity Stream within the AAIP is designed for temporary foreign workers currently employed full-time in the province under a valid Canadian work permit, with a full-time job offer from an Alberta employer. Additionally, Post-Graduation Work Permit holders may also qualify for this stream, providing opportunities for skilled individuals to contribute to Alberta’s workforce and economy.
Launch of New PNP Stream for Tourism and Hospitality
Commencing on March 1, the AAIP will introduce a new stream targeting individuals who have been employed in the tourism and hospitality sector for a minimum of six months and meet the criteria for permanent residency in Alberta. Candidates must hold a valid full-time, non-seasonal job offer from an approved employer within the industry. This initiative aims to alleviate labor shortages in the sector, benefiting businesses across the province, including those in rural areas, by facilitating the retention of skilled workers and supporting economic growth.

The province plans to accept a restricted number of applications for the new stream and expedite their processing alongside other priority initiatives.
