US Visits to Canada Rise

US Visits to Canada Rise While Overseas Travel Declines in April

New figures from Statistics Canada show a split picture for international travel in April 2026. Visits to Canada from the United States climbed 6.9 percent compared with the same month last year, reaching 1.5 million, while arrivals from overseas countries fell 6.7 percent.

April marked the third straight month of year-over-year growth in US-resident travel to Canada. Car trips accounted for 1.0 million of those arrivals, up 6.8 percent, with more than half made as same-day crossings. Air arrivals rose faster still, up 7.8 percent to 366,600, while the much smaller cruise segment slipped 10.8 percent to 22,100 passengers. Even with the monthly gain, US arrivals in April 2026 remained 1.5 percent below April 2024 levels, largely because of fewer car trips.

Overseas Visitors Pull Back

Travel from overseas told the opposite story. Canada welcomed 432,700 overseas residents in April, almost 90 percent of them arriving by air, but that total was down 6.7 percent from a year earlier. Europe and Asia drove most of the decline, shedding roughly 20,800 and 8,200 visitors respectively. The United Kingdom still sent more overseas visitors than any other country, and together with France and Mexico accounted for just over 30 percent of all overseas arrivals.

On the outbound side, Canadian residents returned from 3.8 million trips abroad in April, a 2.1 percent increase that broke a long stretch of year-over-year declines stretching back to early 2025. Trips to the United States accounted for 2.4 million of those returns, up 1.8 percent and the first rise since January 2025, fuelled mainly by a jump in same-day car trips. Air travel to the US continued to soften, down 7.1 percent, and cruise returns from the US dropped sharply as well. Trips from overseas destinations grew faster, up 2.7 percent to 1.4 million.

Cross-Border Travel Still Lags Pre-Tension Levels

Statistics Canada noted that travel patterns between the two countries have been shifting since early 2025, alongside broader political friction. Despite April’s year-over-year uptick, Canadian trips to the US were still down 26.7 percent compared with April 2024, weighed down by steep drops in both car and air travel. US trips to Canada showed a smaller gap, also undershooting April 2024 levels by 1.5 percent.

The Seasonally Adjusted View

Stripping out normal seasonal patterns, Canadian returns from abroad ticked up 0.9 percent on the month, helped by stronger US returns even as overseas returns slipped slightly. Overseas arrivals in Canada edged up 0.3 percent month over month, with gains from Brazil, Iran and Poland offsetting softer numbers from the UK and Germany, while US arrivals fell 2.1 percent on a monthly basis.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Why did US travel to Canada increase in April 2026?

Travel from the United States increased due to higher numbers of both same-day land crossings and air arrivals. Improved travel confidence, business travel, tourism, and family visits all contributed to the year-over-year growth.

2. Why did overseas arrivals to Canada decline?

Statistics Canada reported that overseas arrivals fell mainly because of fewer visitors from Europe and Asia. Factors such as economic conditions, travel costs, and changing international travel patterns may have influenced the decline.

3. Does increased tourism affect Canada’s immigration system?

Tourism and immigration are separate programs, but stronger international travel often supports Canada’s economy, labour market, and hospitality industry. However, entering Canada as a visitor does not provide a direct pathway to permanent residence.

4. Can visitors to Canada apply for permanent residence?

Visitors may become eligible for permanent residence only if they qualify under an immigration program such as Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs), family sponsorship, or another authorized pathway. Simply visiting Canada does not guarantee eligibility for immigration.
