Canada has always been a preferred destination for skilled workers and their families, and the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP) continues to be one of the easiest pathways for permanent residence. However, the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has recently updated its proof of funds requirements, effective July 29, 2025. This update could impact eligibility for newcomers planning to settle in Atlantic Canada.
What Is the Atlantic Immigration Program?
The Atlantic Immigration Program helps employers in Atlantic Canada, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland & Labrador hire skilled workers and international graduates. One major requirement for applicants is showing they have enough money to support themselves and their families upon arrival.
Previously, settlement fund amounts were slightly lower, but the new thresholds are now aligned with Canada’s Low-Income Cut-Off (LICO) rate.
New Proof of Funds Requirements for AIP
Effective July 29, 2025, the minimum funds required for the Atlantic Immigration Program have increased:
Family Size | Required Funds (CAD) |
1 person | $3,815 |
2 people | $4,750 |
3 people | $5,840 |
4 people | $7,090 |
5 people | $8,042 |
6 people | $9,070 |
7 people | $10,098 |
Each additional person | $1,028 |
These funds must be readily available and unencumbered. This means you cannot use borrowed money, property equity, or locked investments as proof. Only personal savings accessible through official bank accounts are accepted.
Who is Exempt from Proof of Funds?
Applicants already working in Canada with a valid work permit under the AIP do not need to show proof of funds. However, newcomers are strongly advised to bring more than the minimum requirement for a smoother transition and to declare amounts exceeding $10,000 at the border.
How to Show Proof of Funds?
Applicants must provide an official letter from their financial institution, including:
- Contact information of the bank
- Account numbers and date opened
- Current balance and average balance over the last 6 months
- Details of any debts (e.g., loans, credit cards)
These documents ensure the funds are readily available for settlement and daily living expenses after arrival. The updated proof of funds requirement for the Atlantic Immigration Program highlights Canada’s focus on ensuring newcomers have sufficient financial resources to settle successfully. If you plan to apply, review your financial documents carefully and ensure you meet or exceed the required amount before submitting your application.
