Canada continues to refine its immigration pathways, and Yukon is no exception. In 2025, the Government of Yukon is launching a new Expression of Interest (EOI) intake system for the Yukon Nominee Program (YNP). This shift from the traditional first-come, first-served model will allow employers to submit applications for foreign workers based on strategic priorities set for the year. The intake period opens on March 31, 2025, and closes on April 22, 2025.
Why the Change?
The move to an EOI system is designed to ensure fairness, transparency, and alignment with Yukon’s labor market needs. With only 215 nominations available in 2025—a significant reduction from previous years—the Government of Yukon aims to allocate spots more effectively. The selection criteria prioritize candidates who can contribute significantly to the region’s economy and community.
Who Will Be Prioritized?
The YNP will focus on candidates who fall into one or more of these categories:
- Foreign nationals who have lived and worked in Yukon for at least one year
- Graduates from Yukon University
- French-speaking or Francophone applicants
- Individuals holding a Temporary Measure Letter or Support from the Government of Yukon
Employers must submit basic information about their chosen foreign workers through the EOI system. Selected candidates will then be invited to submit full applications for nomination.
How the New System Benefits Employers and Workers
The new EOI system eliminates the pressure of a race to submit applications. Instead, it allows Yukon to strategically select nominees who best meet economic and demographic needs. This approach mirrors strategies used by other Canadian provinces to ensure a balanced and sustainable immigration process.
Employers with pending applications from 2024 do not need to reapply; however, the new selection criteria will apply to these applications. The government will provide further guidance to these applicants.
Challenges and Considerations
Due to the reduced allocation, not all who express interest will receive an invitation to apply. The Yukon government has acknowledged that while there is no limit on the number of EOIs submitted, only a fraction of candidates will be selected. This change aligns with broader national immigration policies aimed at stabilizing overall immigration levels.
What’s Next for Yukon Immigration?
At the end of the EOI intake period, the Government of Yukon will publish data on the number of submissions received. This transparency ensures employers and workers stay informed about the nomination landscape. As Canada adapts its immigration framework, prospective applicants should stay updated on evolving policies and seek professional guidance to improve their chances of success.
The Yukon Nominee Program’s new EOI system marks a significant transformation in how immigration is managed in the territory. With limited spots available, prioritizing candidates based on regional needs ensures that both the economy and communities benefit from well-matched newcomers.
