Apply for a Study Permit in Canada

A study permit is essential for legal authorization to study at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada. To begin with the application process, one is required to be well-versed in eligibility criteria. The processing times of the application may vary, so it is important to plan everything in advance with the help of a professional.

Study Permit Requirements

There are two sets of requirements to consider: eligibility requirements and requirements while studying in Canada.

Eligibility Requirements

1. Travel Document: Possess a valid passport or lawful travel document.

2. Acceptance Letter: Obtain an acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).

3. Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) or Territorial Attestation Letter (TAL): Most post-secondary applicants must obtain a PAL/TAL from the province or territory where the DLI is located before applying. If studying in Quebec, obtain a Certificat d’acceptation du Québec (CAQ) instead. 

Note: As of January 1, 2026, master’s and doctoral degree students at public DLIs are exempt from the PAL/TAL requirement.

4. Proof of Financial Support: Demonstrate sufficient funds to cover tuition fees, living expenses, and transportation. As of September 1, 2025, the minimum living-expense threshold for a single applicant is CAD $22,895 (up from the previous $20,635). This is in addition to first-year tuition and travel costs.

  1. Medical Exam: In most cases, a medical exam is required.
  2. Criminal Record: Police clearance certificates may be requested.
  3. Other Supporting Documentation: Extensive supporting documentation is necessary, varying by country.

Requirements While Studying in Canada

Once your study permit is approved, you must:

  • Be enrolled at a DLI.
  • Make progress in your program.
  • Respect the conditions of your study permit.
  • Stop studying if requirements are not met.
  • Leave Canada when the permit expires.
  • As of November 8, 2024, you can no longer change schools on the same study permit. You must apply for a new study permit when switching institutions.

Application Process

  1. Check Eligibility: Ensure you meet requirements and gather necessary documents, including your PAL/TAL.
  2. Prepare Application: Compile documents and have your application reviewed by an immigration representative.
  3. Submit Application: Applications must be submitted online in most cases. The paper-based application option is limited to specific circumstances only.
  4. Arrive in Canada: If approved, receive a Port of Entry Introduction Letter and obtain your study permit upon arrival.

Study Permit Exemptions

Certain individuals may not require a study permit:

  • Short-Term Studies: Programs lasting six months or less.
  • Minor Children in Canada: Under certain conditions.
  • Members of Foreign Armed Forces: On active duty.
  • Studying in Quebec: Requires a CAQ instead.


Note: Student Direct Stream (SDS) Discontinued: The Student Direct Stream (SDS) and the Nigeria Student Express (NSE) were officially ended on November 8, 2024. All new study permit applications — including those previously eligible for SDS are now processed under the regular study permit stream. Faster processing is no longer guaranteed through SDS.
