As summer travel demand increases, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has expanded its Online Passport Renewal Canada program by increasing the daily application limit to 1,500 submissions.
The move is designed to improve access to digital passport services and help eligible Canadians renew their passports more efficiently before the busy travel season. The latest increase follows earlier capacity expansions from 1,000 daily applications in October 2025 and 1,250 applications in March 2026.
IRCC says the gradual rollout allows the department to test, monitor, and improve the online system while ensuring a smooth user experience.
What Has Changed?
The online passport renewal pilot program was initially launched in December 2024 for a limited group of Canadians. Since then, IRCC has steadily expanded access as confidence in the digital platform has grown.
Key updates include:
- Daily application limit increased to 1,500 renewals
- More Canadians can access digital passport services
- Continued testing and system improvements by IRCC
- Additional application capacity expected in the future:
The daily application cap currently resets twice each day at 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Eastern Time.
Who Can Renew a Passport Online?
Not every passport holder is eligible for online renewal. To use the service, applicants must meet specific requirements.
Generally, eligible applicants must:
- Be renewing their own passport
- Have a Canadian residential and mailing address
- Have received their current passport at age 16 or older
- Hold a regular blue Canadian passport issued within the last 15 years
- Have a passport that has expired or will expire within six months
- Use the same personal information on the new passport
- Have a digital passport photo available
- Not require urgent passport processing
Individuals with lost, stolen, damaged, diplomatic, or special passports may need to apply through other channels.
Why This Expansion Matters?
The increased capacity reflects Canada’s broader effort to modernize government services and improve accessibility for citizens.
Online passport renewal offers several advantages:
Faster Application Submission
Applicants can complete their renewal process from home without visiting a passport office or mailing paper forms.
Improved Convenience
Digital submissions reduce paperwork and make the process easier for Canadians living in different regions of the country.
Better Summer Travel Preparation
The increased capacity comes at an important time, as many Canadians prepare for international travel during the summer months.
By expanding daily application limits, IRCC aims to reduce bottlenecks and provide a smoother renewal experience.
Passport Fees and Processing Information
Earlier this year, Canada updated passport fees.
Current fees include:
- Five-year adult passport: $122.50
- Ten-year adult passport: $163.50
The government also continues to offer its “30 Days or Free” service guarantee. If a passport is not processed within the promised timeframe, applicants may be eligible for a fee refund.
Applicants should still apply well before any planned travel dates to avoid unexpected delays.
What Applicants Should Do Before Applying?
Before starting an online passport renewal application, Canadians should ensure they have:
- A valid digital passport photo
- Access to required identification details
- A secure internet connection
- Sufficient time before any upcoming travel plans
Because the current passport is cancelled once the renewal process begins, applicants should avoid applying too close to departure dates.
A Positive Step Toward Digital Government Services
The expansion of Online Passport Renewal Canada demonstrates Canada’s ongoing commitment to improving digital government services.
As more Canadians become comfortable with online applications, expanded capacity can help reduce wait times, improve convenience, and provide a more efficient passport renewal process.
IRCC has indicated that additional capacity may be added as testing continues and the system evolves.
