Canada has taken another step toward addressing housing challenges by securing a decade-long funding agreement to enhance essential infrastructure. The federal and New Brunswick governments have finalized a $150.5 million deal under the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund, aimed at supporting the province’s housing development through improved water and waste management systems.
Significant Investment in Housing Infrastructure
The newly approved funding will be directed toward upgrading drinking water, wastewater, stormwater, and solid waste infrastructure across various communities. These enhancements will facilitate the construction of new homes, accelerating development and ensuring residents have access to essential services.
New Brunswick Housing Minister David Hickey emphasized the importance of this initiative in expediting the province’s housing goals. He noted that aligning this funding with existing programs, such as the Preconstruction and Infrastructure Fund, would enable better coordination of housing projects at different stages, including land preparation, underground infrastructure, and actual construction.
Expanding on Existing Commitments
This agreement builds on ongoing federal and provincial efforts to modernize infrastructure. Through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, over $50 million has been allocated to improving water and wastewater systems in key regions such as Fredericton, Fundy-St. Martins, Riverview, Rothesay, and Strait Shores.

- Municipal funding: $10.9 million
By pooling resources, these governments aim to create sustainable infrastructure that directly supports housing expansion.
